What is end-to-end encryption?

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means that messages are encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the recipient's device. Even the service provider cannot read the content of your messages. But protection is also importantmetadata(who communicates with whom, when, how often).

SimpleX Chat

🟢 Recommended Open Source No identifiers

SimpleX is the first messenger without any user identifiers. Does not require a phone number, e-mail or username. Even the servers do not know the identities of the users.

Key benefits

Anonymous registration
No metadata
Quantum-resistant encryption
Decentralized
Possibility of self-hosting of the server
Open source
Windows, macOS, Linux
Android, iOS

Briar

🟢 Recommended Open Source P2P

Briar is a peer-to-peer messenger designed for activists and journalists. It can work over Tor, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth – even without internet access. Ideal for situations with limited connectivity or censorship.

Android
Linux (beta)

With caveats

Molly (Signal fork)

🟠 With reservations FOSS

Molly is an improved fork of Signal for Android. Removes Google dependencies, adds better security and Tor support. However, it still inherits some of Signal's problems.

An improvement over Signal

UnifiedPush notification (without Google)
Secure data deletion from RAM
Tor support
Encryption of local DB password
Fully FOSS

Inherited issues from Signal

Requires a phone number
Collects metadata
Centralized
You cannot self-host a server

🔴 Not recommended Open Source

Session is a decentralized messenger built on the Oxen network. Does not require a phone number, but it has serious security issues.

Problems

Perfect Forward Secrecy is missing

🔴 Not recommended Open Source Federated

Element is a client for the Matrix protocol – a federated communication network. Although it is open-source and federated, has significant security flaws.

Problems

Collects contact info, identifiers, diagnostics
Collects metadata (IP, timestamps)
No quantum-resistant encryption
Local authentication is missing
No recent security audits
Disappearing messages are missing
No transparency report
Unable to delete messages at recipient
Windows, macOS, Linux, Web
